Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Or, an oak tree Proper charged with a fleur-de-lis Argent. Attached below the shield is a Green scroll inscribed "PORTONS LES FARDEAUX" in Gold letters.

Symbolism
This organization did very excellent work at Soissons and in the Argonne south of Sedan. The arms of Soissons are a red field with silver fleur-de-lis and those of Sedan a bear leaning against an oak tree. The shield is gold or yellow, this being the nearest heraldic equivalent to the buff of the Quartermaster Corps. On the shield is a green tree for the Argonne forest and against the foliage is a silver fleur-de-lis for Soissons.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 1st Division Quartermaster Train on 1 May 1928. It was reassigned to the 1st Quartermaster Regiment on 27 March 1936. It was redesignated for the 1st Quartermaster Battalion on 9 September 1940. The insignia was rescinded on 3 June 1958. It was reinstated and redesignated for the 1st Supply and Transport Battalion on 6 February 1964. It was redesignated for the 101st Support Battalion with the description amended on 5 June 1987.

Motto

PORTONS LES FARDEAUX (Let Us Carry The Burdens) was selected as the unit's motto as under stress of battle the train carried everything from food and ammunition into action to wounded men out.

It was redesignated for the 1st Quartermaster Battalion on 9 September 1940. The insignia was rescinded on 3 June 1958. It was reinstated and redesignated for the 1st Supply and Transport Battalion on 6 February 1964. It was redesignated for the 101st Support Battalion on 5 June 1987.
